ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Accessibility Services Center (ASC) is part of the Student Services division and is dedicated to providing comprehensive support to students with diverse abilities. The department provides academic accommodations and support services according to the educational limitations of the disability found in the disability documentation and the interactive process, all according to Title V California State regulations. With this counseling, and guidance for students is provided to ensure equitable access to educational opportunities. The ASC is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where students with accessibility needs, learning differences, and neurodiversity can thrive academically and personally.The ASC team is dedicated to promoting equity by addressing barriers that may prevent students from fully participating in college life. We are looking for a disability/academic counselor who will collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to ensure students receive the support they need to succeed, with a focus on student-centered approaches and inclusivity.We want instructors who care deeply about students, pedagogy, and the future of our community. We are looking for an individual who is willing to take thoughtful risks to support student success, accommodate diverse needs, and understand the unique challenges faced by each learner.DESCRIPTION: The primary role of this position is to provide academic, career, and disability adjustment counseling services to students with disabilities according to the Title V California State regulations, the ADA, and the 504 federal regulations. The successful candidate will engage in individual and group counseling, conduct intake assessments, and develop academic accommodation plans for students, in alignment with the individual’s disability documentation and the interactive process. The role includes supporting students in understanding their rights and responsibilities related to accommodations, as well as providing guidance in their academic and career goals. The faculty member will also collaborate with faculty and staff to promote awareness of accessibility services and to create an inclusive campus climate. Teaching assignments may include evening hours and off-campus instruction in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement, and participation in student outreach and recruiting as part of the Division and College-wide services. We anticipate the first round of interviews to be conducted in-person the week of [February 10, 2025]. Second round interviews are tentatively set for late February. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
  • Conduct disability counseling and academic, career, and learning needs counseling for students with diverse abilities.
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure the provision of appropriate academic accommodations, support services, and inclusive teaching practices.
  • Assist students with the development of individualized academic accommodation plans through the interactive process, and the disability documentation, promoting equitable access to educational opportunities.
  • Provide individual/group counseling sessions and workshops on academic success, time management, career development, and self-advocacy, with a focus on inclusive strategies for students with learning differences.
  • Guide students in setting academic and career goals, including course selection, transfer preparation, and vocational objectives, ensuring alignment with their personalized support needs.
  • Maintain confidential records of counseling sessions, academic accommodations, and student progress, adhering to all legal and ethical standards related to accessibility services, especially the Title V State regulations, the ADA, and the federal 504 regulations.
  • Conduct outreach to faculty and staff to promote awareness of Accessibility Services Center (ASC) offerings and to foster an inclusive, equitable environment for students with learning differences, neurodiversity, and other support needs.
  • Engage in curriculum development related to academic counseling, specifically for students with diverse abilities, ensuring that course materials and teaching methods are accessible and inclusive.
  • Participate in student recruitment, orientation, and other college-wide events.
  • Teach and/or support college-level courses related to student success, career development, and strategies for academic success for students with disabilities.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, college governance, and professional development activities.
  • Provide instruction in accordance with established program course outlines of record; guide students about program requirements; evaluate and provide timely verbal and written assessments of student performance; prepare and grade assignments and examinations; meet administrative timelines and submit completed reports and required documents; and maintain required student attendance, scholastic records, and other related materials.
  • Work in collaboration with other full-time instructors in coordinating curriculum and mentoring adjunct faculty in these courses.
  • Participate in the development, assessment, and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLO) and Program Level Outcomes (PLO), as appropriate.
  • Actively participate in department/school meetings and maintain regular office hours in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and College and School policies; participate in college governance and decision-making.
  • Participate in college-wide committee work and collegial governance.
  • Maintain effective communication with peers, staff, students, and administrators.
  • Teaching assignments may include evening and weekend hours, either in-person or online, as well as off-campus instruction in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and College and School policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Academic Counseling.

  • Strong commitment to promoting equity and inclusion in academic and counseling services.
  • Ability to design and implement academic accommodation plans and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
  • Skilled in utilizing counseling techniques, including career counseling and academic guidance, that address the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
  • Proficient in the use of technology, including software systems used for academic counseling and record-keeping.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to create an inclusive campus environment.
  • Experience in providing counseling and guidance to students from historically underrepresented and marginalized communities.
  • Possess a commitment to teaching and learning and provide a supportive learning environment to enhance student success and completion.
  • Possess a willingness to take initiative in co-curricular activities, outreach and recruitment efforts, special events, and school projects.
  • Possess a willingness to participate in shared/participatory governance of the Division and the College.
  • Demonstrate an ability to self-evaluate and effect change for personal growth and improvement, as well as an ability to accept constructive feedback and effect change appropriately and participate in professional growth and development activities and lifelong learning.
 
WORK ENVIROMENT:
 
The successful candidate will work in an office environment within the Accessibility Services Center, utilizing technology to manage student records and provide remote counseling services.
The role may require occasional evening or weekend hours, as well as participation in meetings and workshops across multiple campuses and online formats.
Frequent use of online meetings using Zoom or Microsoft Teams with webcam on.
Phone and email will be required to communicate with all campus communities.
