Position Profile

The Homeless Service Work Certificate Program is designed for students interested in entry-level positions in the homeless response system. This certificate consists of introductory workforce training within the homeless response system, health equity, effective practices, and field-based learning. Students who successfully complete this program will develop a caring approach to human engagement as well as an understanding of funding sources, opportunities, and the guidelines for accessing these resources for employment in the non-profit ecosystem. Students will see the importance of connecting authentic and effective relationships with oneself, their team, their community, and participants in this sector. Students also will gain an understanding of the framework involved in serving unhoused and formerly unhoused people by utilizing best practices and strategies. Finally, using crucial hands-on field experiences with frontline homeless services workers, students will become adept at navigating support systems within a collaborative teaching and learning environment.
 
As part of this program, Part-Time Counselors will support students who have started their field placements so that they can be successful. 

Primary Duties/Responsibilities

Counselors will:

  • Support students by modeling problem-solving skills, effective communication, and conflict resolution rooted in trauma-informed approach and harm reduction principles. 
  • Acts as a mentor to students in the program to reflect on internship experiences and coursework; ties coursework to internship experience.
  • Support students around career readiness and career planning activities.
  • Design and facilitate 4-6 workshops based on the needs and recommendations of students and faculty.
  • When working with individuals, help connect them to internal and external resources, including but not limited to entitlement benefits, housing, and legal resources.  
  • Coordinate with program staff to ensure there is communication and collaboration to promote student success.
  • Participate in college, department, and faculty organization activities.
  • Work with Homeless Service Work Leadership Team to develop and implement a needs assessment for students.
  • Gather and synthesize data relevant to program enhancement and future opportunities for investment. 
  • Collaborate with Leadership Team to prepare final report of recommendations 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicant must meet the minimum qualifications of a Counseling faculty discipline at the college. Please refer to the California Chancellor's Office Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges to review the minimum qualifications for faculty disciplines.

Master's Degree in one of the following:

  • Counseling
  • Rehabilitation Counseling
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Counseling Psychology
  • Guidance Counseling
  • Educational Counseling
  • Social Work
  • Career Development
  • Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling
OR the equivalent

(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed Master's Degree in Social Work or related field
  • Social work experience for students at community colleges or universities
  • Leadership experience in the homeless services sector 
  • Knowledge of the homeless system of care, including public, private, and philanthropic agencies
