Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has immediate need for full-time Ground Maintenance Workers in the Facilities Department. These are bargaining, non-exempt, grade 15 position. Non-exempt positions are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. The work schedule is Monday-Friday, 6:00 am-2:30 pm. This position is considered Essential Personnel.
The Grounds Maintenance Worker maintains campus grounds by providing a clean, safe, and pleasant environment for the College community.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Landscape & Green Space Management
- Mowing, trimming, edging, blowing, weeding, pruning, and planting of trees, shrubs, and flowers along with the removal of trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Mulching, watering, seeding, laying sod, core aeration, and applying lime and fertilizers.
- Leaf and debris removal.
- Ground Maintenance
- Trash removal of parking lots and pole cans, inner campus trash cans and grounds along with recycling, bulk trash items, graffiti removal with chemicals, and dead animal removal.
- Removal of branches, limbs, and fallen trees campus-wide.
- All trash items may contain biohazards materials.
- Equipment Maintenance
- Maintenance of equipment on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
- Perform preventive maintenance, oil changes, and tune-ups; replace air filters; repair exhaust systems; rotates tires; replace fuel pump filters, serpentine belts, and hoses. replace turn signal control devices, parking brake cables, broken mirrors, worn cables, batteries, and battery ends.
- Fabricate metal using oxygen acetylene torches and welding equipment to repair and modify ground equipment.
- Performs snow plow and spreader repairs.
- Maintains all snow removal equipment by replacing pumps, selenoids, hoses, and electronic controls.
- Parking Lot Maintenance
- Install and repair the asphalt with the use of an asphalt roller and tamper.
- Install, repair, and replace sign poles and signs. install, repair, and replace traffic control poles.
- Storm Water and Inclement Weather Management
- During inclement weather; snow and ice removal, and on rainy days keep the storm and roof drains free of debris to prevent water build-up along with the pond drain.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED or the equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job.
- One year of related experience.
- Valid driver’s license is required as evidence of a good driving record.
- Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of lawn equipment, planting and maintenance of plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs.
- Experience operating snow removal equipment such as tractors and trucks with blades.
- Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and techniques of grounds maintenance work: tools, equipment, and materials used; and hazard/safety precautions.
- Knowledge of plant, tree, shrub, flower care, and identification.
- Knowledge of the operation/use of small engines and performing minor repairs.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), the Internet, and College applications may be required.
- Ability to perform medium to heavy-duty grounds maintenance work.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others, communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Hiring Range $18.55 to $23.19 per hour. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.
