Under supervision and/or direction, employees in this job class perform a variety of duties to ensure a safe and secure environment for the College community as well as facilitate the efficient and safe execution of College functions and activities. Employees in this job class patrol campus grounds and actively enforce College policy. Employees provide assistance to students and visitors on campus and various College facilities. Public safety officers observe, identify and respond to safety and security incidents and situations as well as act as a deterrent to crime and other unlawful activity by providing high visibility throughout the campus. Employees in this class respond to emergencies and suspicious activity, investigate incidents and prepare reports. Resolve conflicts as well as parking and ticketing issues. May be assigned to work any shift at any campus location.
Contacts and interaction vary and may multiple constituencies such as first responders from outside agencies (police/fire), members of the College community, students, vendors and the public, providing information, service and assistance.
List of Functions:
Conduct thorough security and safety checks of assigned College facilities, to include checking for open doors, windows and/or other unsafe conditions. Patrol parking lots and surrounding grounds/facilities noting dangers (potential and existing), and defects or violations. Document violations of College policies and complete incident reports. Respond to complaints/calls related to possible criminal activity, coordinate with applicable authorities if necessary, and prepare incident reports. Investigate complaints made by faculty, staff or students on campus. Lock and unlock campus buildings and offices as necessary as well as lockdown of campus buildings during emergency conditions and closings. Control personnel/visitor access and track activities where applicable. Provide routine assistance to students, employees, and visitors; respond to emergency calls for assistance including medical emergencies. Enforce parking policies through issuance of parking tickets and towing of autos when necessary. Assist with snow removal by coordinating vehicle evacuations of lots designated for snow removal. Investigate traffic accidents on campus. Administer first aid and/or call for additional assistance as needed. Provide security services such as parking and traffic direction and crowd control for special events. Provide special transportation and/or escort services as needed. Work closely with outside agencies (police and fire) on matters relating to the safety and security of the College community. May testify in court. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and practices of building and area security practices.
Knowledge of all applicable federal and state laws, College rules and regulations and departmental policies as they relate to safety/security, basic emergency management and other protocol. Knowledge of fire hazards, first aid methods/application, radio communications and electronic monitoring/alarm equipment and systems. Skill in operating ticket writing machines. Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion as well as function decisively and authoritatively in emergency situations. Ability to effectively interact with hostile individuals in order to avoid escalation of situations. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work cooperatively with others as well as communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and follow written and verbal instructions. Knowledge of basic computer skills including familiarity with office applications. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to pay attention to details and analyze situations for proper response. Ability to perform building and area safety and security work. Ability to participate in HazMat (hazardous material) and other safety training and perform related required tasks.
Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required
High school diploma or GED, and any combination of education, training, and experience providing understanding of the field, and the ability to perform the duties of the job. One year of continuous security experience at a higher education institution or two years of experience as a security officer.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver's license and evidence of a good driving record is required. The following certifications are required: first aid, CPR, and automated external defibrillator (AED).
Physical Demands
Ability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
Ability to walk up to ten miles during the course of the day. Ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium to heavy objects weighing up to 50lbs without assistance and 50 to 100lbs with assistance, as well as squat, walk, climb (stairs and ladders), bend, crouch, stoop, kneel, stand, grasp, reach, pull and repetitive motions.

Work Environment
Work is typically performed indoors and outdoors in various types of weather with occasional exposure to varying noise levels and physical threats.
